ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT We aimed to evaluate the frequency of bee pollen production, its botanical origin and chemical composition when collected in different seasons. Our results indicate that higher proteins (22.80 ± 3.09%) and flavonoids (2789.87 ± 1396.00 μg 100g-1) levels were obtained in the winter season, which also showed greater pollen production (134.50 ± 35.70 grams) and predominance of the Myrtaceae family. As for spring we found high concentrations of lipids (4.62 ± 2.26%) and low ash content (2.22 ± 0.39%). Regarding the amino acid composition and vitamin C content, we found no differences between the averages throughout the seasons. Our results highlight the importance of understanding not only the botanical origin and the chemical composition of bee pollen, but also the harvesting frequency of this product by bees, so that it becomes possible to supplement the colonies in times of natural food resources shortage.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT This study was done to discover any beneficial effect of a medicinal mushroom Agaricus brasiliensis extract on the honey bee. Firstly, a laboratory experiment was conducted on 640 bees reared in 32 single-use plastic rearing cups. A. brasiliensis extract proved safe in all doses tested (50, 100 and 150 mg/kg/day) irrespective of feeding mode (sugar syrup or candy). Secondly, a three-year field experiment was conducted on 26 colonies treated with a single dose of A. brasiliensis extract (100 mg/kg/day) added to syrup. Each year the colonies were treated once in autumn and twice in spring. The treatments significantly increased colony strength parameters: brood rearing improvement and adult population growth were noticed more often than the increase in honey production and pollen reserves. These positive effects were mainly observed in April. In conclusion, A. brasiliensis extract is safe for the bees and helps maintaining strong colonies, especially in spring.

ABSTRACT Pollen morphology characterization is important in taxonomy, conservation and plant breeding, and pollen viability studies can support breeding programs. This study investigated pollen morphology and male fertility in 18 species of Bromeliaceae with ornamental potential. For morphological characterization, pollen grains were acetolyzed and characterization of exine was done using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Pollen viability was investigated by in vitro germination and histochemical tests. Species belonging to Aechmea and Ananas genera presented medium size pollen, except for Ae. fasciata, with large pollen. Al. nahoumii, P. sagenarius and the Vriesea species analyzed showed large pollen, except for V. carinata, with very large pollen. Pollen of Aechmea, Ananas and P. sagenarius presented bilateral symmetry, diporate, exine varying from tectate to semitectate. Al. nahoumii and Vriesea species presented pollen with bilateral symmetry, monocolpate; exine was semitectate, reticulate and heterobrochate. Germination percentage and tube growth were greater in SM and BKM media. Histochemical tests showed pollen viability above 70% for all species, except for Ananas sp. (40%). Pollen morphology is important for the identification of species, especially in this family, which contains a large number of species. High rates of viability favor fertilization and seed production, essential for efficient hybrid production and conservation.

ResumenThygater aethiops es una abeja nativa que puede encontrarse en parques y jardines en diversas áreas urbanas como aquellas de la ciudad de Bogotá (Colombia). Sin embargo, es poco lo que se conoce sobre su biología y sus adaptaciones ecológicas a áreas urbanas. El presente estudio tuvo como objetivos describir ciclos estacionales y la actividad de forrajeo diaria de T. aethiops, así como identificar el recurso polínico usado por estas abejas a lo largo de un año en una población que nidifica en un agregado en el "Parque Nacional Enrique Olaya Herrera" de Bogotá. Cambios en la actividad de nidificación fueron registrados semanalmente contando el número de nidos activos en el agregado entre diciembre/2012 y febrero/2014. Para determinar el horario de forrajeo diario, se contó el número de abejas que entraban a sus nidos en un periodo de 10 minutos cada hora entre las 8:00 y las 14:00 h. Semanalmente se capturaron hembras que estuvieran regresando a sus nidos con cargas de polen, entre septiembre/2012 y agosto/2013; dichas cargas fueron analizadas. Se observó tres picos de nidificación tras los picos de precipitación, pero el número de nidos activos no estuvo correlacionado con la precipitación. El número de nidos activos se redujo (20-50 % de los nidos) después de que se registrara un disturbio antrópico en el área de nidificación. Las abejas forrajean por polen y néctar entre las 8:00 y 14:00 h con un pico de actividad a las 10:00 h. La actividad de forrajeo diaria cambió durante el periodo de estudio debido a disturbios antrópicos. No hubo una relación significativa entre la temperatura del aire y el número de entradas a los nidos. El horario de actividad no cambió entre los periodos secos y lluviosos. Se encontró un total de 26 tipos polínicos en 169 cargas de polen. Ulex europaeus (Fabaceae) y Solanum laxum (Solanaceae) fueron las plantas más abundantes representadas en las cargas de polen durante todo el periodo de estudio. De acuerdo a estos resultados, T. aethios sería considerada una especie mesoléctica. La habilidad de T. aethiops para utilizar diferentes recursos polínicos tanto nativos como introducidos, así como su presumible capacidad para recuperar su población después de disturbios son características que le pueden haber permitido adaptarse a ambientes urbanos. El conocimiento de los recursos florales, así como otras características biológicas de esta abeja son importantes para promover su conservación en áreas urbanas.


Abstract:Thygater aethiops is a native bee that can be found in parks and gardens in diverse urban areas such as those in the city of Bogotá (Colombia). However, little is known about its biology as well as ecological adaptations to urban areas. This study aimed to describe the seasonal cycle and daily foraging activities of T. aethiops, as well as identify the pollen resources used by this bee over a year in a population nesting in an aggregation in the "Parque Nacional Enrique Olaya Herrera" in Bogotá. Changes in the nest activity were monitored weekly by counting the number of active nests in the aggregation between December/2012 and February/2014. To determine the daily foraging activity, the numbers of bees entering their nests over a period of 10 minutes every hour between 8:00 and 14:00 h were recorded. Females with pollen loads entering to their nest were captured weekly, between September/2012 and August/2013, and their pollen loads analyzed. Three nesting peaks occurred after the precipitation peaks, but the number of active nests was not correlated with precipitation. The nesting activities stopped in a large number of the active nests (20-50 % of nests) after an anthropic disturbance was registered in the nesting area. Bees forage for nectar and pollen between 8:00 and 14:00 h, with a peak at 10:00 h. Daily foraging activity changed during the study period due to anthropic disturbance. There was not a significant relationship between air temperature and the number of females entering their nests. Foraging activities did not change between the dry and rainy seasons. A total of 26 pollen types were found in 169 pollen loads. Ulex europaeus (Fabaceae) and Solanum laxum (Solanaceae) were the most abundant plants represented on the pollen load across the study period. According to these results, T. aethiops would be considered a mesolectic species. The ability of T. aethiops to use different pollen resources both native and exotic, as well as to presumably recover its population after disturbances, are characteristics that may have allowed this bee to adapt to urban environments. ABSTRACT

We present the first records on pollination biology of Jacquemontia montana (Moric.) Meisn. (Convolvulaceae), a widespread climber in the Chapada Diamantina. Our objectives were to (1) characterise flower morphology and biology of J. montana; (2) sample flower visitors and (3) make inferences about potential pollinators, based on foraging behaviour. Observations and sampling were performed on two patches from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM, May 15th to 16th, 2007. The corolla is bowl shaped, pentamerous, gamopetalous, actinomorphic, and yellow, with a mean diameter of 22.43 ± 1.81 mm, the depth being variable during flower phases. Stigma receptivity lasted from 8:00 AM-3:30 PM and pollen viability from 9:00 AM-3:30 PM Pollen. showed great decline in number but not in viability during anthesis. Nectarivorous (Coleoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera) and herbivorous (Orthoptera) insects were found on the flowers. Both male and female bees (Dialictus spp., Robertson 1902) were the most frequent flower visitor. The bees' behaviour, and time spent on flowers, varied according to the resource gathered (i.e., pollen or nectar). The Dialictus species are likely to be the main pollinator of J. montana, considering the frequency, contact with reproductive parts, and carrying only J. montana pollen spread over the ventral part of the thorax, abdomen and legs. Although not quantified, nectar may still be available in the afternoon, considering the behaviour of bees on flowers during this time. Pollen:ovule ration that was1.200:4, suggests facultative xenogamy.


Apresentamos os primeiros registros sobre a biologia da polinização de Jacquemontia montana (Moric.) Meisn. (Convolvulaceae), uma trepadeira com ampla distribuição na Chapada Diamantina, Bahia. Os objetivos deste estudo foram: (1) caracterizar a morfologia e biologia floral; (2) amostrar os visitantes; e (3) inferir os possíveis polinizadores, baseando-se no comportamento de forrageio. Observações e amostragens foram conduzidas em duas manchas das 8:00 às 15:30 horas, nos dias 15 e 16 de maio de 2007. A corola é amarela, tem forma de disco, pentâmera, gamopétala, actinomorfa. A corola exposta tem largura média de 22,43 ± 1,81 mm. A receptividade estigmática ocorre das 8:00 às 15:30 horas e a viabilidade polínica das 9:00 às 15:30 horas, se sobrepondo fortemente. O pólen, porém, apresentou forte declínio em número, devido à retirada pelos visitantes, mas não em viabilidade durante a antese. Insetos nectarívoros (Coleoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera) e herbívoros (Orthoptera) visitaram as flores. Hymenoptera incluiu representantes das famílias Formicidae (formigas) e Halictidae (Dialictus spp.). Machos e fêmeas de Dialictus spp. foram os visitantes mais frequentes. O comportamento e duração das visitas dessas abelhas variaram conforme o recurso coletado (i.e., pólen ou néctar). As espécies de Dialictus foram os polinizadores potenciais de J. montana, considerando sua frequência, contato com órgãos reprodutivos, e pelo fato de carregar apenas pólen de J. montana na superfície ventral do tórax, abdome e pernas. Embora não tenha sido quantificado, o néctar deve estar disponível até o final da tarde, considerando o comportamento das abelhas nas flores nesse período. A relação pólen:óvulo, no valor de 1.200:4, sugere a ocorrência de xenogamia facultativa.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to describe the ultrastructural changes of the egg apparatus associated with fertilisation of the natural tetraploid Trifolium pratense. The pollen tube enters one of the synergids through the filliform apparatus from the micropyle. Before the entry of the pollen tube into the embryo sac, one of the synergids begins to degenerate, as indicated by increased electron density and a loss of volume. This cell serves as the site of entry for the pollen tube. Following fertilization, the vacuolar organisation in the zygote changes; in addition to the large micropylar vacuole, there are several small vacuoles of varying size. Ribosomal concentration increases significantly after fertilisation. In T. pratense, ultrastructural changes between the egg cell and zygote stages are noticeable. Several marked changes occur in the egg cell because of fertilisation. The zygote cell contains ribosomes has many mitochondria, plastids, lipids, vacuoles. After fertilization, most of the food reserves are located in the integument in the form of starch. The zygote shows ultrastructural changes when compared to the egg cell and appears to be metabolically active.

ABSTRACT

We report the occurrence of cytomixis in wild populations of Himalayan poppy (Meconopsis aculeata Royle),which is considered to be an important and threatened medicinal plant growing in the high hills of the Himalayas. The impact of cytomixis on meiotic behaviour, reduced pollen viability and heterogeneous-sized pollen grains was also studied. Cytological studies in the seven wild populations from the high hills of Himachal Pradesh revealed that all the Himalayan populations exist uniformly at the tetraploid level (2n=56) on x=14. The phenomenon of chromatin transfer among the proximate pollen mother cells (PMCs) in six populations caused various meiotic abnormalities. Chromatin transfer also resulted in the formation of coenocytes, aneuploid, polyploid and anucleated PMCs. Among individuals that showed chromatin transfer, chromosome stickiness and interbivalent connections were frequently observed in some PMCs. The phenomenon of cytomixis in the species seems to be directly under genetic control; it affects the meiotic course considerably and results in reduced pollen viability.

Reproductive phenology and flower anatomy of the plants Aloe vera and Aloe saponaria (Aloaceae) in Cumana, Venezuela. The reproductive phenology and the floral anatomy of two species of Aloe kept under nursery conditions were analized in eastern Venezuela from September 2001 to September 2002. A. vera flowered between December and May; A. saponaria from November through August. In both species, the anthesis lasted 48 h., the anther dehiscence coincided with the opening of the perianth, the stigma receptivity was higher on the second day of anthesis and nectar production reached 0.34 ml/flower. In A. vera 228±77 yellow flowers on long scapes of 76±11 cm and with 1 - 3 shafts were observed; A. saponaria had 94 ± 33 orange flowers on more compact scapes with 3-5 shafts. The pollen/ovule ratio was 4 115.2 in A. vera and 3 247.1 in A. saponaria, thus they can be classified as compulsory xenogams. Frequent visits of Apis mellifera, Trigona sp., Poliste sp., Eumenes sp., Vespa sp., Leucippus fallax and Amazilia tobaci were recorded. Although both species showed a high production of pollen and nectar, and the presence of potential pollinators, by the end of the flowering period, fruits were only observed in A. saponaria, with a 12 % reproductive efficiency. Coupled with the stigmatic receptivity results and the preliminary intra and interspecific crossing experiments, this suggests the existence of protandry and self-incompatibility as reproductive barriers reducing endogamy in these species. Se analizó la fenología reproductiva y aspectos anatómicos florales en dos especies de Aloe conservadas en condiciones de vivero en el oriente de Venezuela, de septiembre 2001 a septiembre 2002. A. vera floreció de diciembre a mayo; A. saponaria de noviembre a agosto. En ambas especies, la antesis duró 48 h, la dehiscencia de la antera coincidió con la apertura del perianto, la receptividad del estigma fue mayor al segundo días de antesis y la producción de néctar alcanzó 0.34 ml/flor. En A. vera se observaron 228±77 flores de color amarillo sobre escapos extensos de 76±11 cm y 1-3 ejes; a diferencia de A. saponaria con 94±33 flores anaranjadas en escapos más compactos de 62±5 cm y 3-5 ejes. La relación polen/óvulo fue de 4 151.2 en A. vera y 3 247.1 en A. saponaria, clasificándose como xenógamas obligatorias. Se registraron visitas frecuentes de Apis mellifera, Trigona sp., Poliste sp., Eumenes sp., Vespa sp., Leucippus fallax y Amazilia tobaci. A pesar de que ambas especies manifestaron una elevada producción de polen, néctar y la presencia de potenciales polinizadores, al término de la floración, sólo se observaron frutos en A. saponaria, con una eficiencia reproductiva de 12%, lo cual, junto a los resultados de la receptividad estigmática y los ensayos preliminares de cruzamientos intra e interespecíficos, sugiere la existencia de protandría y autoincompatibilidad como barreras reproductivas que reducen la endogamia en estas especies.

As espécies vegetais apresentam flores com características morfológicas e funcionais diversificadas, que podem ser associadas a sistemas de polinização, incluindo espécies polinizadas pelo vento, besouros, mariposas, abelhas, insetos pequenos, aves ou morcegos. Calculamos as freqüências dos sistemas de polinização entre as espécies lenhosas em cinco fragmentos de cerrado no Brasil central e testamos se os sistemas de polinização estavam de fato relacionados às características florais. Amostramos 2.280 indivíduos, pertencentes a 121 espécies, das quais 99 foram descritas em relação a todas as características florais. A maioria dessas espécies possuía antese diurna, cores claras e flores abertas. Os grupos mais freqüentes foram os das plantas polinizadas por abelhas, insetos pequenos e mariposas. Uma análise de ordenação das espécies e dos caracteres florais mostrou que houve agrupamentos entre as espécies com alguns sistemas de polinização, tais como as polinizadas principalmente por besouros, mariposas, aves e morcegos, para os quais inferências baseadas em características florais são recomendadas. No caso das espécies polinizadas por abelhas e insetos pequenos, inferências a partir dos caracteres florais não são recomendadas devido à grande dispersão dos escores das espécies e à sobreposição entre esses dois grupos, que ocorreram, provavelmente, devido à ausência de especificidade nas relações planta-polinizador.

ABSTRACT

Investigamos a morfologia floral, as características do néctar e a visita de beija-flores a Palicourea crocea (Rubiaceae), uma espécie ornitófila arbustiva comumente encontrada no sub-bosque da vegetação ripária na planície de inundação do Alto Rio Paraná, Brasil. As flores são distílicas, sendo o dimorfismo estilete-estames acompanhado por outras variações morfológicas no comprimento da corola, altura das anteras, comprimento das anteras e comprimento e forma das papilas estigmáticas. Não foi observada reciprocidade estrita na posição dos estigmas e anteras entre flores longistilas e brevistilas. A floração da espécie ocorreu durante a estação chuvosa, de outubro a dezembro. A disponibilidade de néctar foi relativamente constante ao longo do dia, o que aparentemente possibilitou aos beija-flores visitar a planta o dia todo. O conteúdo energético de néctar por flor (66,5J) e a demanda diária de energia dos beija-flores visitantes(superior a 30kJ) os obrigaria a visitar diariamente centenas de flores da espécie, o que pode aumentar o fluxo de pólen. Três espécies de beija-flores foram observadas: beija-flor-dourado (Hylocharis chrysura), beija-flor-de-colete-preto ( Anthracothorax nigricollis) e esmeralda-de-bico-vermelho ( Chlorostilbon aureoventris). A freqüência de visita dos beija-flores, as características do néctar e a baixa disponibilidade de outras flores visitadas por beija-flores na área de estudo indicam que P. crocea é uma fonte de néctar importante para beija-flores de bico-curto no local.

Los sistemas reproductivos fueron evaluados para 51 especies de plantas en relación a la forma de vida, sistema de polinización, tipo de vegetación y fenología de floración en la planicie costera de la península de Paraguaná, Venezuela. Los sistemas sexuales resultaron independientes de la forma de vida, sistema de polinización, tipo de vegetación y fenología. La distribución de frecuencia de los sistemas sexuales fue 82.3% hermafroditas, 15.6% monoicas y 1.9% dioicas. Todos los sistemas sexuales mostraron un pico de floración durante el mínimo de precipitación. La frecuencia de los sistemas genéticos de reproducción fue 35.3% de especies autoincompatibles y 64.7% de especies autocompatibles, incluyendo especies parcialmente autocompatibles. Entre las especies autocompatibles, 45.1% resultaron autogamas y 19.6% no autogamas. Los sistemas genéticos de reproducción estaban asociados significativamente a: (1) forma de vida de las plantas, especies autocompatibles tienden a ser especies herbáceas y especies autoincompatibles tienden a ser árboles y arbustos; (2) tipo de vegetación, en los tres tipos de vegetación predominan las especies autocompatibles, pero en la vegetación de manglar la proporción de especies autocompatibles y autoincompatibles fue similar; y (3) sistema de polinización, muchas de las especies autocompatibles tenían sistemas de polinización polifílicos. Los sistemas de apareamiento, xenogamia y autogamia, solo estaban asociados significativamente con la forma de vida de las plantas. La xenogamia predominó para especies leñosas, mientras que la autogamia predominó en especies herbáceas. La alta frecuencia de hermafroditismo, autocompatibilidad genética y autogamia son relacionados con la abundancia de especies herbáceas en las áreas de estudio, la polinización polifílica y a las condiciones climáticas extremas unida a la insularidad de la península de Paraguaná


Breeding systems were evaluated for 51 plant species according to life form, pollination system, vegetation type, and phenology, in the coastal plain of Paraguaná Peninsula, Venezuela. Sexual systems were no associated to life form, pollination system, vegetation type, and phenology. The frequency distribution of sexual system was 82.3% hermaphroditism, 15.6% monoecy, and 1.9% dioecy. All sexual systems had a peak during the lowest rainfall. Genetic system distribution was 64.8% self-compatibility (including partially self-compatibility) and 35.2% self-incompatibility. Among self-compatible species, 45.1% were autogamous (19.6% not autogamous). The genetic systems were associated significantly to: (1) plant life form: self-compatible species tend to be herbaceous and self-incompatible plants tend to be woody species; (2) vegetation type: self-compatible species were predominant in the three vegetation types, but in the mangrove the frequency of self-compatible and self-incompatibles was similar; and (3) pollination system: most of the self-compatible species were polyphilous. Mating systems: xenogamous and autogamous species were associated only with plant life forms. Xenogamous plants were mostly woody species and autogamous plants were mostly herbaceous species. ABSTRACT

A spontaneous male-sterile, female-fertile mutation affecting bivalent arrangement at the metaphase plate and cytokinesis was detected in line BR98-197 of the soybean breeding program developed by Embrapa - National Soybean Research Centre. Untill diakinesis, meiosis was normal with chromosome pairing as bivalents. From this phase, in several meiocytes, bivalents were not able to organize a single metaphase plate and remained scattered in the cytoplasm in a few or several groups. In these meiocytes, chromosomes segregated in both divisions giving rise to several micronuc1ei. However, the main cause of male sterility was the absence of cytokinesis after telophase II. Instead of the typical tetrads of microspores, four nucleate coenocytic microspores were formed. In the mutant, pollen mitoses did not occur, and after engorgement by starch, pollen underwent a progressive process of degeneration

ABSTRACT

The genus Senna (K.Bahuin) Miller (Cassieae) is represented in Argentina by 35 species and several varieties distributed in temperate, tropical and subtropical regions, and presents a high degree of endemism. Some taxa are used for medicine, animal foraging and ornamental purposes. Floral morphology, phases, rewards, attractants, visitors, pollen, reproductive system, P/O ratio, OCI and ISI indexes of enantiostylous Senna corymbosa were analyzed for morphological androecial differentiation and possible related functional differences between stamens groups. The study was carried out over three consecutive flowering seasons in March of 1999, 2000 and 2001, in two populations near the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The species has a buzz-pollination syndrome. The pollinators are Bombus atratus that vibrate the stamens, leading to nothotribic or sternotribic deposition of pollen. P/O ratio and pollen production were high thanks to the precise pollinating mechanism that needs a large delivery of pollen to ensure effective pollen deposition. P/O ratio also indicates that the species is xenogamous, although geitonogamy and autogamy (only induced, not spontaneous)were also recorded. The species is self-compatible. There were differences in hand-pollination treatments between long and medium stamens in fruit set, as well as in vitro differential fertility between their pollen grains. Hence, there are morphological and functional androecium differences: the medium stamens play a nutritional role while the long ones play a reproductive one. These differences are reflected in the breeding system. Moreover, differential fertility and enantiostyly may diminish the effects of self-compatibility by partially reducing the contribution of geitonogamy to selfing


Se analizaron la morfología y fases florales, recompensa, atractivos, visitantes, polen, sistema reproductivo, índices OCI e ISI y relación polen/óvulo de la especie enantiostílica Senna corymbosa. El objetivo fue estudiar su biología floral y determinar la posible presencia de diferenciación morfológica en el androceo. Era importante saber si las diferencias morfológicas reflejaban diferencias funcionales entre los grupos de estambres. El estudio se llevó a cabo durante tres estaciones de floración consecutivas en marzo de 1999,2000 y 2001,sobre dos poblaciones presentes en zonas protegidas de la ciudad de Buenos Aires, Argentina. La especie presenta un síndrome de polinización vibrátil (buzz-pollination).Los polinizadores son individuos de Bombus atratus, capaces de vibrar los estambres y extraer polen, el que se deposita nototríbica y/o esternotríbicamente. La relación P/O fue extremadamente elevada, así como la producción de polen. Esto se relaciona con el comportamiento de los visitantes y con la alta precisión del mecanismo de polinización, que requiere una gran cantidad de polen para asegurar su efectiva deposición en el cuerpo del insecto. La relación P/O indica que la especie es xenógama, aunque se registraron también geitonogamia y autogamia inducidas. La especie, por lo tanto, es autocompatible. Se encontraron diferencias en los tratamientos de polinización manual entre estambres largos y medianos en cuanto al establecimiento de frutos, así como una fertilidad diferencial in vitro entre sus tipos polínicos. Existen, así, diferencias morfológicas y funcionales en el androceo: los estambres medianos tienen un papel nutricional mientras que los largos cumplen un papel reproductivo. Estas diferencias se reflejan en el sistema de cruzamiento. Más aún, la fertilidad diferencial y la enantiostilia disminuyen los efectos de la autocompatibilidad reduciendo parcialmente la contribución de la geitonogamia a la endogamia

ABSTRACT

Tomato pollen when treated with 24-epibrassinolide (EBR), it was observed that in vitro pollen germination was more tolerant to high temperature. A significantly higher in vitro pollen germination, enhanced tube growth and low pollen bursting were observed in presence of EBR at 35 degrees C. Since a preconditioning treatment of tomato plant was not required for these effects, it is concluded that EBR treatment increased basic thermotolerance of germinating pollen. This study provided the first evidence for EBR induced thermotolerance in germinating pollen.
